TaxJar alternative for rate lookups: when all you need is the rate

If all you need is the sales-tax rate for a ZIP code, you do not need a $39-a-month engine: public state data gives the state rate everywhere and a combined average per ZIP where the state publishes a file, which Veriport serves from a free tier with the coverage stated on each answer. For address-exact rates, product taxability or filing, keep an engine. TaxJar is a full sales-tax engine: address-exact rates, product taxability, nexus tracking, filing. Its 2026 price change moved the Starter plan from $19 to $39 a month, with AutoFile at $50–55 per filing. Many small SaaS and shops call it for one thing: the rate for a ZIP at checkout or in a quote. This page compares that one job. What is different, honestly

TaxJar and Zip.tax are more precise: they assign an address to its exact jurisdictions; Veriport does not, because that needs licensed boundary data. Where a ZIP spans several jurisdictions, we return the average with its minimum and maximum and say how many jurisdictions share the ZIP. TaxJar does far more: taxability by product, nexus alerts, filing. Veriport is cheaper and narrower, answers only from public, dated sources, and states its coverage in every answer (zip_average, state_only, none), so your code can decide when an estimate is good enough and when to ask for an address-exact rate.

When to pick which

Pick TaxJar when you file in several states, need taxability per product, or must put the address-exact rate on every invoice. Pick Zip.tax when you need address-level rates and nothing else. Pick Veriport when an estimate with a stated range is enough (quotes, price displays, sanity checks of another engine, back-office reports), when you sell in Ohio or Washington where the ZIP files are covered, or when you already use it for EU VAT and want one bill.

Questions

Can I use this for the tax line on my invoices?
In a ZIP covered by one jurisdiction (the answer says jurisdictions: 1), the ZIP average is that jurisdiction’s combined rate from the state file. Elsewhere, the exact rate depends on the address; use an address-level engine for the invoice line.
