US sales-tax rates by ZIP: what is covered, per state
GET /us/sales-tax?zip= answers from public data only: a dated table of the 50 states and DC, and ZIP-level files that state revenue departments publish openly. A ZIP code is a postal route, not a tax boundary: several jurisdictions can share one. So every answer says how far it goes in coverage, and where the ZIP is covered it gives the average combined rate with its minimum and maximum, not one number presented as exact.
zip_average: Ohio (1393 ZIPs, 2026-10) and Washington (715 ZIPs, 2026Q4): the combined state + local rate averaged across the jurisdictions in the ZIP, with min, max and the number of jurisdictions.state_only: every other state and DC: the state rate, plus the statewide population-weighted average local rate and the maximum local rate, so you can estimate and show a range.none: territories (Puerto Rico, Guam, US Virgin Islands), military mail (AA, AE, AP) and unknown prefixes.- Table verified 2026-10-24; next review 2027-01-15; ZIP files refreshed each quarter. 1 call per lookup; 20 a day without a key.

How the ZIP averages are made
- WA — Average of the combined rates of the ZIP+4 ranges in the ZIP, weighted by range width; min and max over those ranges. File for 2026Q4, fetched 2026-10-24.
- OH — Average of the county rates (state + county + transit) listed for the ZIP; min and max when the ZIP crosses county lines. File for 2026-10, fetched 2026-10-24.
What is not offered, and why
Address-level jurisdiction assignment (which county, city and special district a street address falls in) needs boundary geodata: some states publish it under the Streamlined Sales Tax programme, the rest is licensed by commercial vendors. Without it, a ZIP answer is a range, and this API says so rather than guess. Product taxability (is SaaS or a digital download taxable in this state?) and nexus are not covered either. For filing, exemption certificates or address-exact rates, use a full sales-tax engine.
Use the ZIP average to estimate, quote or sanity-check. For a tax line on an invoice in a ZIP that spans several jurisdictions, the exact rate depends on the address.
Questions
- Why only two states at ZIP level?
- Because only some revenue departments publish an open, machine-readable file keyed by ZIP that can be fetched and dated. Each new state file is added when it is ingested and announced in the changelog; the coverage field changes from state_only to zip_average for its ZIPs.
- Is the average weighted?
- Washington’s average is weighted by the width of the ZIP+4 ranges in each jurisdiction (a proxy for the number of delivery points); Ohio’s is the plain average of the county rates listed for the ZIP. Min and max are exact over the file.

- State and Local Sales Tax Rates, Midyear 2026 — state rates, population-weighted average local rates, maximum local rates (sources: Sales Tax Clearinghouse, state revenue departments) — Tax Foundation, consulted 2026-10-24. Used for the 51 state rows (state rate, average local rate). The Tax Foundation folds the mandatory statewide local add-ons of California (1.25 %), Utah (1.25 %) and Virginia (1 %) into the state rate; the table keeps that convention and says so per row.

- Ohio Department of Taxation — The Finder, file downloads: Ohio County Rate Table by Zip Code (CSV) — Ohio Department of Taxation, consulted 2026-10-24. CountySalesTaxRateReport.csv read on 2026-10-24: 2,130 ZIP/county rows, 1,393 ZIPs; a ZIP crossing counties lists one row per county.
