Vatstack alternative: EU VAT APIs compared on price and VIES outages

For EU VAT number validation at a low or irregular volume, the cheaper alternatives to Vatstack ($15 a month for 500 validations) are TrustComponent (€9 a month), Apify actors billed per run, and Veriport (100 free calls a month, then $9 for 2,000 prepaid calls). Vatstack is the reference product in this niche and a good one. This page is for the developer who needs the same VIES validation at a lower volume price, wants prepaid calls instead of a subscription, or wants the degraded path (cached, dated answers when a member state is down) to be explicit in the response. What is different, honestly

Vatstack has more: a dashboard, webhooks, VAT quotes by customer location, invoices, years of operation, and more member-state quirks handled. If you need a hosted dashboard your finance team logs into, Vatstack is the richer product. Veriport has less, on purpose: three deterministic endpoints, an OpenAPI document, prepaid calls that do not renew, and a response that states its own provenance (live, cache, structure-only) so your code decides. The VAT rates table and IBAN validation come in the same budget, which matters to a billing system that needs all three. What neither can do: make VIES available. Both cache; ours marks the cached answer stale and dates it, and never attaches a consultation number it did not obtain live.

When to pick which

Pick Vatstack when you want a finished SaaS with a UI and your volume is above 5,000 a month with budget for $150. Pick TrustComponent when you are in the EU and €9 a month for 2,000 checks with bulk is the whole need. Pick an Apify actor when you already run Apify and can live without a cache or an SLA. Pick Veriport when you want to pay for what you use (a few hundred validations a quarter is the common case for a small SaaS), need rates and IBAN in the same call budget, or want the degraded path explicit and documented.

Questions

Is migrating from Vatstack hard?
The response shapes differ; the fields you use (valid, name, address, consultation number) exist in both. Budget an hour for a small integration. Keep your Vatstack history: consultation numbers are evidence regardless of who obtained them.
